CREATIVE

From short stories to children’s fiction to feature length screenplays, I love the creative process; the development of character, the importance of plot twists, the power of storytelling and, best of all, the creative collaboration.

After writing about an artist who fakes her own death to become famous in the indie-feature, Peace of Work; finishing a script about the undying, never-ending and unexplainable love of Fireflies; researching the secret and seductive world of swing clubs in The Lifestyle (no, I did NOT swing, but do have my regrets), I switched gears and penned Yellow a middle-grade, modern-day Huck Finn starring two twelve-year-old  girls.

A finalist in the 75th Annual Writers Digest Children’s Fiction Novel-in-Progress, Yellow is complete and currently being considered by agents on both coasts.

Eleven-year old Chicagoan, Ruthie Franco - amateur sleuth and adventurer-lover thrives on solving problems; especially if the problems are none of her business.  So, when her family takes a trip to Italy and leaves Ruthie with her uncle and his “new” family in an odd little river town called Flatrock, Tennessee, Ruthie is in for the adventure of her life.

It doesn’t take more than five seconds for Ruthie to realize that this will be the worst summer of her life.  Miserable and mean twelve-year-old Felicia and her mom, Aunt Georgia, find Ruthie an inconvenience and go out of their way to make her feel unwelcome. Unsettled and homesick, Ruthie is forced to occupy her time alone in this strange town and is quickly befriended by free-spirited, twelve-year old townie, Yellow Pruett.

In the midst of her own investigation Yellow, coincidently, is looking for a partner to help solve “one of the biggest mysteries in Tennessee history!”  Ruthie soon learns, The River Rat, the Pruett family honky-tonk and popular second home for the neighborhood crazies and oddball characters, is the center of river gossip and local scandal!  Quickly adapting to the enchanting world where amazing food, unique music and, best of all, town secrets are served, Ruthie immediately becomes a part of the Pruett family.

When the girls are clued-in by Yellow’s kooky, moonshine-guzzling granny that the reverend of the local church and Felicia’s mom are involved in unsavory activities, Ruthie’s super-sleuth radar goes off.  Joining forces with Yellow’s jack-of-all-trades little brother, Weasel, to round out their trio, the hilarious threesome turn the eclectic river town upside down!
